How to get help from the ACLU

ACLU-NM underwrites all costs when we take a case. We are most interested in cases that preserve or establish rights when other methods have been exhausted or when litigation will substantially raise community awareness to prevent future problems.

What kinds of cases does ACLU-NM take?

ACLU-NM takes cases that raise significant civil liberties issues. Some examples of rights we defend include freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of association, privacy, equality, and due process. Most of the cases we bring are against the government because the constitution usually applies only to government agencies, not private parties or individuals. We do consider cases against businesses who violate civil rights laws.

How to file a complaint

Print out the appropriate form and mail the completed complaint to the following address:

Or you may fax your complaint to 505-266-5916.

ACLU-NM takes written complaints only. However, we do not accept complaints via e-mail. We cannot give legal advice over the phone, and we do not take walk-in appointments.

We have a panel of volunteer attorneys that meet regularly to review written complaints. The process usually takes 6-8 weeks.
