Abortion is safe and legal in New Mexico… for now.
There is mounting pressure on the U.S. Supreme Court to dismantle the protections guaranteed by the Constitution and Roe v. Wade, with hearings beginning this March. If Roe is overturned or gutted, it would permit an old, outdated abortion ban to become law in New Mexico. The old abortion ban requires that women–including survivors of rape and incest–at any stage of pregnancy, would have to beg for permission to have an abortion in front of a panel of strangers. Additionally, any person who performs or receives an abortion would be charged with a felony.
Fortunately, Governor Lujan-Grisham and the NM House are our biggest allies in repealing the old, out-dated abortion ban, but we have a problem in our Senate. A handful of Senators are obstructing the introduction of a bill to repeal the old abortion ban. We need their public commitment to move the “Repeal The Abortion Ban” bill forward.
Join us in talking with these key legislators and more to convince them to repeal the ban!
