The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of New Mexico condemned the Third Judicial District Attorney’s and the New Mexico Attorney General’s failure to hold Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD) Officer Jared Cosper accountable for shooting an elderly woman, Amelia Baca, on April 16, 2022.
A group of immigrants detained in inhumane conditions at New Mexico’s Torrance County Detention Facility (TCDF) is suing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for certifying a sham inspection in 2022 that allowed ICE to evade federal law and continue detaining immigrants at the facility.
The American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico condemns this act of racist and hateful violence, as well as the cruel effort by the Rio Arriba County Commission to engage in cultural erasure and violence by honoring a colonizer against the wishes of community members.
