ALBUQUERQUE, NM – After 24 years of leading the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of New Mexico, Peter Simonson is stepping down as executive director, transferring leadership to interim executive director Leon Howard. Simonson, who has been at the helm since 2000, has transformed the organization from a small team of three to a leading force for civil rights in New Mexico with over 30 staff members today. He will continue to support the ACLU-NM in an advisory role for the next three months, retiring at the end of 2024.
"Leading the ACLU of New Mexico has been the privilege of a lifetime,” said Simonson. “Over these 24 years, I have witnessed the power of collective action and the deep commitment of our staff, supporters, and communities in the fight for justice. When I started, we were a small team with big dreams, and today we’ve built something far beyond what I could have imagined. Every victory we’ve achieved has been the result of tireless work, collaboration, and an unwavering belief in the principles of justice and freedom. I have immense gratitude for all we have accomplished together, and I will carry these memories and lessons with me forever."
As interim executive director, Leon Howard brings a wealth of experience and a profound commitment to the ACLU of New Mexico’s mission. With nine years of collective experience at the organization, Leon has held key roles including staff attorney, legal director, and most recently, deputy director. Having worked closely with Peter Simonson throughout this leadership transition, Leon’s deep understanding of the ACLU-NM’s work and values uniquely positions him to guide the organization.
“I am honored to take on the role of interim executive director and continue building on the foundation Peter established,” Howard said. “His leadership has been transformative, and I am excited to guide the ACLU of New Mexico into the future, advancing the fight for civil rights and justice in our state.”
Under Simonson’s leadership, the ACLU of New Mexico achieved several landmark victories, including winning the freedom to marry for same-sex couples, ending “policing for profit,” repealing a draconian abortion ban, holding the Albuquerque Police Department accountable for excessive force, and helping to pass the New Mexico Civil Rights Act.
In this next chapter of his life, Simonson has plans to write novels, spend more time with family and friends, and enjoy the New Mexico outdoors.
The ACLU of New Mexico’s board of directors will conduct a formal search to name a permanent executive director in the coming months.
