The ACLU of New Mexico Regional Center for Border Rights, along with the rest of their partners in Southern Border Communities Coaltion, launched the Revitalize Not Militarize campaign to change the dominant narrative surrounding the U.S. Mexico border region from that of enforcement to one of investment. We need to invest in border communities and improve the quality of life for border residents while improving trade for the nation; not saturate our border communities with even more unaccountable and poorly supervised federal agents. We believe in an a approach of revitalization, not militarization. Along with a comprehensive immigration reform, this will stimulate the U.S. econonomy and help us move forward together.
The ACLU-NM Regional Center for Border Rights has led several community actions as a part of the Revitalize Not Militarize campaign, including spearheading the Border Reality Checkpoint community action. In May, 2015 the RCBR coordinated with organizations across the border region to set up "Border Reality Checkpoints" near Customs and Border Protection checkpoints to raise awareness of how abuse in our nation's expanding "border zone" threatens civil liberties and impacts the quality of life for all of us.
