ALBUQUERQUE, NM - Today, President Trump declared a national emergency to fund a wall along our southern border. Peter Simonson, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico, issued the following statement in response:
“The real crisis at the border has always been one of Trump’s own making. Declaring a national emergency to justify building a multibillion-dollar monument to racism along our southern border is an egregious abuse of presidential power that will further militarize our communities and destroy our wildlands. The Constitution clearly allocates appropriation powers to Congress. Sidestepping the House to satisfy his own personal agenda sets a dangerous new precedent that will have far-reaching and potentially irreversible consequences.”
